Little St Mary's Church is on Trumpington Street, Cambridge, CB2 1QJ.
We hope to be joined by representatives from Orwell, who run the house, intersecting charities, and many people keen to support. Please feel free to come along whether you are a long-term champion of the House or are interested in finding out more. We will be delighted to see you. An RSVP to [email protected] will help us prepare refreshments! Thank you. In the last few weeks we are so pleased to have been able to give residents the funds for two new laptops and two new bikes, all thanks to the generous donations of our amazing supporters.
Such essentials are beyond the reach of new residents and without them they can't connect to the education and training they want to access. With them, new possibilities are there for the taking. It's simple but so effective. Your support has made a real impact and we are very grateful! Thank you. Dear friends and supporters,

Saying thank you matters! Recently we have received some really generous donations anonymously, or from people whose names are shown but we have no contact details. If that's you: THANK YOU! We are so grateful and want you to know that while we can't reach you to say so personally, we are encouraged and inspired by your generosity. It will make a huge difference to people's lives. If you are thinking of donating, if you are willing to do so then please feel free to write to us at [email protected] to let the Treasurer know. We would love to be able to acknowledge your kindness. |
After a long period of deep uncertainty the Trust is overjoyed that Orwell's recent bid has been successful and the County Council have awarded them with the contract to maintain Whitworth House as a hostel for young women.
The Trust is delighted for the residents and is confident that Orwell's vision for the House keeps alive what the Trust has always prioritised: housing for young, vulnerable women in a female only setting with excellent support.
We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who campaigned to keep Whitworth House open, from residents' petitions to our then Chair Ruth Jackson on local TV, from Councillors to cake bakers, so many individuals, churches and groups leant their support. Orwell's belief in the House's unique value and vital work in our area has carried us to this much brighter future. Thank you!
The Trust continues to offer support to residents as they build their futures.
We are always happy to hear from those who would like to support us.

Ruth here-- signing off, having come to the end of my term as Chairperson of the Whitworth Trust. It's been quite a year. 🤯
At the AGM last night I had such a lot of people to thank for their time, generosity and support, and a number of people to pay tribute to for the role they played in the campaign we held this year--- not least the staff and residents of Whitworth House, who suffered a time of deep uncertainty for much of this year. We all look especially at Jade Tomlinson, the resident who started the petition to 'save Whitworth House' back in January, and who has done brilliant work to raise awareness of the particular problems facing young women in need of housing, community, and social bonds in our city.
The Whitworth Trust committee and I are grateful to all of the individuals and organisations that we've made links with this year, and who helped us with our campaign to support Whitworth House.
To anyone who is even remotely interested in joining the committee, please do get in touch with the wonderful Trustees via [email protected] and they would be delighted to hear from you.
They are STILL looking for someone to take over from me as Chair (even though interim arrangements are now in place), but they could also benefit from:
> student reps interested in fundraising
> student reps interested in campaigning and raising awareness, and working with Whitworth House
> someone to help edit the website and Facebook now that I'm not going to be around (with my emojis) any more
I will miss being involved in the Trust, but will look forward to watching it grow, and go from strength to strength.
